It was September 15 …. A little over 4 decades ago. Durga Puja was earlier than usual that year. The community pujas in Kolkata have just started the preparations …. “puja r bNaash poraychilo sedin ….” Says my Maa, every time she talks about *that day.*
It started out as a very normal day for her, completing her household chores, cooking, etc. while taking care of her toddler and saying goodbye to her still “pretty new husband of three years,” while he went off to work. But what unfolded was a far cry from normal and turned her whole world upside down in a way, that her life never felt normal ever again ….. it came in as a phone call from a stranger! Someone who found an ID card from the wallet of a young man who laid lifeless on a busy street of Kolkata after a hit and run accident, called!
Well, time and tide wait for none …… it didn’t for us either! Life went on! A new set of normal set in …. We learnt to live a totally normal new life. Everyone in our family took such great care of my Maa and I …. Maa breathed a sigh of relief in the midst of the void her life has become, to see all the well-wishers taking her only child under their wings …. She decided to live, live a life just for me.
Maa wanted to do something special this year …. But did not know how. Thanks to Suryasish of Care Unlimited and his team-members, Maa’s wish was given shape. I could not be there physically, but they made sure to make me a part of the whole process through regular updates and then photos from the day, they spent at The Tollygunge Old Age Home run by “The East India Charitable Trust.”
I cannot thank the divine power enough to have made me able to fulfill this small wish for Maa and pay a homage to my Baba, whom I barely (cannot) remember.
